Whenever possible, the parents/guardians of students should arrange with the treating physician for medications to be given outside of school hours.

The administration of medication to a student on school premises shall be done only by the school nurse or by a county substitute school nurse, and shall be permitted only when the student’s treating physician or dentist certifies in writing that the administration of medication during school hours is essential to the health of the student.

The following documentation must be on file prior to the administration of medication by the school nurse:

  • A physician’s written certification, on a school district form, that the administration of medication on school premises is essential to the health of the student 

  • A physician’s written order including student’s name, date, medication name, dosage, time to be given, diagnosis, side effects to be observed, length of time the order is in effect, and physician’s signature

  • A parent/guardian’s written request for the administration of the prescribed medication. 

The self-administration of medication by a student shall be permitted on school premises only for asthma or other potentially life-threatening illness. Please speak with your child’s school nurse for specific requirements.
