SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES INFORMATION

Absences - Please report all absences to Tel-Safe. If we do not receive a call, you will receive a call to verify the whereabouts of your child. Tel-Safe is the best way to notify the school of absences. Please do not depend on email notification to the teacher or the nurse. Use the following numbers to report an absence to your child's school:

Do not send your child to school if they have

  • A fever of 100.0 or more. Children must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine before returning to school.

  • Vomiting/diarrhea.  May return 24 hours after symptoms resolve and when tolerating regular diet

  • An infectious skin condition - For open or draining lesions, exposed areas must remain covered while at school. A physician’s note stating the condition is no longer contagious may be required by the school nurse in order for the student to return to school.

  • A continuous cough and/or runny nose if the cough is such that it interferes with their ability or the ability of others to concentrate on school work and the student cannot manage the runny nose.

  • Strep throat - Students may not return to school until fever free for 24 hours and at least 12 hours after antibiotic therapy has begun and student is able to participate in activities


Physical Education Restrictions : All students are expected to participate in the health and physical education program. If your child must be excused from gym and recess due to an injury or illness, please contact your child’s school nurse for the required documentation necessary to be excused from gym.   *Please note that a child out of gym may not participate in sports or recess.

 Medications: If any medication must be administered to a student during school hours, it must beaccording to the following Board approved policy:                       

  • Pupils requiring prescription medications at school must have a written signed statement from the physician that identifies the type, dosage, purpose, frequency and side effects of the medication. Only the school nurse may administer medications

  • The medication must be delivered by a parent to the health office in an original bottle labeled by the pharmacy.

  • Parent written permission must also be given. A medication form, which has an area for both the physician and the parent to sign, is available from the health office.

  • The school nurse should be advised of any medication being taken by a child attending school particularly any that might cause a behavior change.

  • The self-administration of medication by a student shall be permitted on school premises only for asthma or other potentially life-threatening illness. Please speak with your child’s school nurse for specific requirements.

Health Screenings: Screenings are done according to NJ State guidelines.Height, weight, and BP annually, with vision, hearing and scoliosis done by grade level according to guidelines.
Parents/guardians will be notified if further medical follow up is needed.
