Student Opportunities
Princeton University invites students and parents to a special lecture, "Islands as Natural Laboratories of Evolution: From Darwin to the Grants and Beyond," on December 4, 2009 at 6:00 pm at Guyot Hall. A reception begins at 5:15 pm. This event has been planned to honor Peter and Rosemary Grant who are the recipients of the Inamori Foundation's 2009 Kyoto Prize for their work with evolution and Darwin's Finches..
The Princeton University Society of Women Engineers has announced its Fall High School Colloquium for girls who are interested in learning more about careers in engineering. The theme this year is "Inspiring Innovation." It will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 from 9:00 until 4:00 at the University. If you are interested, please see Ms. Barzilai or Mrs. Jameson to sign up. Five students from CHS will be chosen to attend, and the deadline for registration is November 27.
Toshiba Exploravision is a K-12 student competition that provides a turnkey learning setting for building the skills to better prepare students for life in the 21st century. Students work in small groups under the guidance of a teacher/coach to create and explore a vision of a future technology. Entries are due February 2, 2010. Robert Wood Johnson Medical School will again present the Mini Medical School for High School Students: Achieving Excellence in the Sciences in the winter and spring of 2010. Six two to three hour session will be held on Wednesdays beginning at 6:00 pm. Tentative dates are Feb 24, March 3, March 17, April 7, April 14 and April 28. Interested students should see Ms. Getman in the Counseling Services Office for more information. The application deadline is December 15 and space is limited. The New Jersey Academy of Science has announced it annual Grant in Aid Program in which students may apply for a grant by submitting a research proposal on a science or math project they will perform in the 2009-10 school year. Grant winners must present their research results at the Annual Meeting on Saturday April 24, 2010 at Kean University. The 2010 Mercer Science and Engineering Fair will be held on march 14 - 16, 2010 at Rider University. There are three divisions according to grade level: Elementary, grades 4-5, Junior, grades 6-8, and Senior, grades 9-12. You may contact William Wong for more information at president@mercersec.org. Registration closes on March 1, 2010.
The primary goal of the 2010 Monmouth Junior Science Symposium is to promote research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics at the high school level. Scholarships are available to students who choose to submit a research paper and present their findings at the symposium. The event will be held March 25 and 26, 2010 at Monmouth University. The West Point Bridge Contest has begun. Students may log in, download software, and design the least expensive bridge that will pass a simulated load test. Register your team and submit as many designs as you like. All US students age 13 through grade 12 are eligible to compete. Check the website: http://bridgecontest.usma.edu
The National Student Leadership Conference offers programs in a variety of subjects ranging from Arts and Business to Engineering and Forensic Science. Scholarships are available. Check the website for dates and locations: www.nslcleaders.org
College Information
Kean University offers a 4 + 4 B.S./M.D. linkage program with Drexel University College of Medicine and a five year combined bachelor/master's degree program. The five year program offers two separate degree tracks: one to train high school science and math teachers and the second for research careers in areas such as biotechnology and computational applied mathematics that are in high demand by NJ industries. Scholarships are available to cover the cost of in-state tuition for qualified students. The deadline to apply for these programs is March 1, 2010. Skidmore College annually awards up to five $40,000 Porter Presidential Scholarships in Mathematics and Science to students who demonstrate exceptional promise for study in these areas. Kean University in Union, NJ has announced that the New Jersey Center for Science and Technology will offer an innovative and rigorous program that accepts high school seniors into a five year combined BS/MA or BS/MS program. There are two tracks, a teacher track to prepare high school math and science teachers, and a professional researcher track to prepare researchers for business and/or industry. All NJCSTE students are given full tuition scholarships for the first two years and a laptop on the first day of class. More information is available at http://njcste.kean.edu.
