The Hopewell Valley Regional Language Arts program is centered on building literacy and readership, promoting and sustaining writing growth, and constructing a foundation for critical textual analysis in practice. The department is committed to continually improving writing instruction for varied purposes across disciplines; looks to evaluate and gather resources supporting best practices; and generally, seeks to nurture a love for reading and writing among all students.
Central High School: Poetry Out Loud
Hopewell Valley Central High School announces a school contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. The competition, presented in partnership with the New Jersey Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Over the past 10 years, Poetry Out Loud has reached nearly 3 million students, more than 9,500 schools, and thousands of teachers across the country. On January 12, 2017, students from CHS will participate in the Poetry Out Loud school contest. The winner of this competition will advance to the New Jersey Region 1 Poetry Out Loud contest, with the opportunity to advance to the state and national finals, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.

Attendance at the Hopewell Valley Poetry Out Loud Competition is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.
